The brand new stadium will be one of the host venues for the 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Birdair’s project role consisted of detailing, fabricating and supplying PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane that make up the facility’s tensile roofing system while TBB provided the installation of the 301,400 square-foot tensile membrane roof.

“Birdair has a wealth of experience in the design and construction of stadiums across the globe and we are honored be involved with Fonte Nova Stadium,” says Ian Wright, Brazil proposal manager for Birdair. “The facility’s tensile roof will provide the benefits of natural daylighting, solar shading and minimal maintenance.”

Fonte Nova features three levels of seating in the shape of a horseshoe, with the opening at the southern end overlooking the picturesque Dique do Tororó. The oval-shaped roof design complies with FIFA World Cup guidelines to provide cover for the stadium’s 50,000 spectators while meeting aesthetic, acoustic and environmental impact requirements.

To date, Birdair has completed work on more than 85 sports facilities globally, incorporating tensile architecture into a variety of single-sport and multi-purpose stadiums and arenas.
