Located in the valleys of the Andes, Piscina Olympica in La Paz, Bolivia, stands out in the rugged terrain with its bright, eye-catching, concave roof constructed from PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane.

Originally built for the 1977 Bolivarian Games, the facility upgraded the roof from PVC to PTFE with the help of Birdair, Inc. Birdair removed the existing PVC roof, installed new perimeter clamping and the new 73,700 square-foot PTFE membrane roof. Birdair also provided some new structural cables to modify the geometry and eliminated the any ponding or runoff issues the structure previously had.
The previous PVC roof was severely damaged from the intense UV exposure due to the high altitude. The PTFE fiberglass membrane selected for the new roof offers superior UV-resistance (fully UV stable), increased daylighting and tensile strength. In turn, this will maximize comfort for athletes and spectators while providing protection from inclement weather as well as providing a durable and long lasting roofing system.
The roof replacement allows Piscina Olympica to maintain its unrestricted sight lines and open-air atmosphere to allow spectators in the grandstands to watch events taking place in the Olympic 25 meter and dive pools.
“The shape and size of the facility is still unique today. Although the structure was built more than 35 years ago, it still looks modern and the newly cable-supported PTFE roof continues to wow athletes,” says Michael Grant, project manager for Birdair. “The sports community is excited about the upgraded Piscina Olympica and its contribution to the development of its athletes.”
