Talisman Centre for Sport and Wellness in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has received an updated 162,000 square-foot tensile roofing system from Birdair.
The full-service athletic facility's current tensile roof has been replaced with an updated Tensotherm™ with Lumira™ aerogel roofing system. Talisman Centre is the second facility in the world to incorporate a Tensotherm roofing system. The new roof matches the look of the facility's old roof, originally installed in 1983, while providing five times the existing insulation value and solving condensation problems.
Developed by Birdair, Cabot Corporation and Geiger Engineers, Tensotherm consists of a Lumira™ aerogel sandwiched between two layers of structural PTFE fiberglass membrane. This creates an insulated, energy-efficient inner layer that maintains translucency and promotes natural daylighting.
The project was completed in early 2011. A renewed Talisman Centre now helps provide sport and wellness services to the facility's 1,800 daily visitors.
