Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has been awarded three of the four primary 2010 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup stadium projects in South Africa, including Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, Durban Stadium in Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
As roofing sub-contractor, Birdair will play a vital role in the construction of the three athletic facilities, each of which features its own distinct roof design. This includes a bowl-shaped glass roof with a mesh liner for Green Point Stadium and a sweeping architectural PTFE fabric membrane roof for both Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay Stadiums. In addition to the roof membrane, Birdair is erecting 1,600 metric tonnes of compression ring steel on Green Point Stadium and 2,400 metric tonnes of roof girders on Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Upon completion, each facility will enjoy the variety of benefits associated with tensile architecture, including natural daylighting, solar shading and open-air design, among many others.
“We’re honored that our range of experience in the global stadium sector has led to Birdair’s involvement in the 2010 World Cup,” says Kevin Mayer, vice president of business development, sales and marketing for Birdair. “We look forward to realizing each stadium’s custom roofing design.”
To date, Birdair has completed work on 65 sports facilities globally, incorporating tensile architecture into a variety of single-sport and multi-purpose stadiums and arenas. Birdair combines breakthrough technologies with unparalleled experience to create structures that meet both facility and patron requirements. Visit www.birdair.com to learn more.
