Birdair, Inc. is the recipient of a 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award for design excellence in specialty fabrics applications from the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) for its work on for the Amber Interactive Center in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
The Amber Interactive Center, also known as Centro Ambar, earned the IFAI Outstanding Achievement Award in the Frame-Supported Structures category. Projects were submitted in 30 categories overall and evaluated for complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and functionality.
Birdair fabricated and installed the 34,800 square foot TiO2-coated PTFE fiberglass membrane roof for the Amber Interactive Center designed by renowned Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and his firm, ICH. The iconic structure was inspired by the human brain and serves as a drug awareness, prevention and educational center for the youth of Mexico.
The left and right “hemispheres” of the structure match the asymmetry of the brain and pay homage to the different functions of each side. The design of the structure is split by a band of glass with a smooth half-dome on one side and two overlapping domes on the other side.
“It is a distinct honor to be recognized by the IFAI for our work on the Amber Interactive Center, which was a unique project and is the first structure in Mexico featuring TiO2-coated PTFE fiberglass membrane,” explains David Capezzuto, Director of Business Development for Birdair. “Birdair continues to build iconic structures that visually define a facility, a city and even sometimes an entire region.”
The winners were announced Nov. 7 at the IFAI Expo Americas 2012 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Mass.
For several years, Birdair has been the proud recipient of multiple awards from the IFAI, including one for the Moses Mabhiba Stadium in 2010. The IFAI is the only trade association in the world representing the entire specialty fabrics/technical textiles industry and serves 2,000 member companies.
