NYC Public Charter School Gets a Rooftop Makeover with Roof Combination of PTFE Membrane and Stainless Steel Mesh
One of the largest network of public charter schools in the country expanded its footprint in the Bronx NY with a new K-8 School. Part of the new 6-story school design includes a rooftop turf field with a new tensile membrane roof system by Birdair providing protection for kids to play various sports and gym classes. The roof features a combination of 4,000 sq.ft. of solid PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane on one half and approximately 8,000 sq.ft. of stainless steel mesh system on the other half. Birdair's scope of work for the project included design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the PTFE tensile fabric membrane, the stainless steel mesh, and clamping and hardware (supporting structural steel framing provided by others). Completed at the end of 2023, the school experience offers students numerous advanced placement classes, robotics, theater, visual arts, graphic design, and athletics.
