USC Aquatic Center features Birdair Grandstand Canopies
The Uytengsu Aquatics Center at the University of Southern California added several new amenities, including permanent seating for 1,500 spectactors with tensile membrane shade canopies from Birdair, Inc. Birdair's scope of work included design, fabrication, supply and installation of the north and south custom tensile canopies that feature approximately 12,300 square-feet of PTFE, a Teflon(R)-coated woven fiberglass membrane. The PTFE structures provide comfort, shade and protection from the elements for fans cheering in the grandstands.
This facility has a rich history. The USC aquatic center was home of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games as well as many international and national swimming, diving and water polo championships. The addition of the Birdair canopies will help make the experience much more comfortable and enjoyable under the hot sun of Southern California.
The renovation and expansion of the former USC McDonald’s Olympic Swim Stadium also includes new lighting for nighttime competitive events and will accommodate up to 2,500 spectators for larger events.
