Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures of all sizes, through its subsidiary Taiyo Birdair do Brasil (TBB), Ltda. of São Paulo, Brazil has been awarded a subcontract for the roof construction of Fonte Nova Stadium in Salvador, Brazil. Fonte Nova Stadium will be one of the host venues for the 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.
Birdair’s project role consists of detailing, fabricating and supplying PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane that will make up the facility’s tensile roofing system. Birdair will also fully install the PTFE membrane for the 301,399 square-foot tensile roof. “Birdair has a wealth of experience in the design and construction of stadiums across the globe and we are honored be involved with Fonte Nova Stadium,” says Ian Wright, Brazil proposal manager for Birdair. “The facility’s tensile roof will provide the benefits of natural daylighting, solar shading and minimal maintenance.”
Fonte Nova features three levels of seating in the shape of a horseshoe, with the opening at the southern end overlooking the picturesque Dique do Tororó. The oval-shaped roof design complies with FIFA World Cup guidelines to provide cover for the stadium’s 50,000 spectators while meeting aesthetic, acoustic and environmental impact requirements.
