Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has been awarded the design-build contract to supply roof and façade cladding systems for the Haddad Riverfront Park’s new development in Charleston, WV.
Birdair’s contributions to the project include a retractable fabric canopy over the park’s existing seating area, a steel and fabric roof for the park’s new permanent stage and a canopy covering a new pavilion overlooking the Kanawha River.
The TiO2-coated PTFE fiberglass fabric membrane designated for the project requires minimal maintenance because it uses natural resources such as rain water and natural sunlight to cleanse itself. PTFE also allows for shade and comfort.
“TiO2-coated membrane offers protection from severe weather conditions, while also allowing natural sunlight to filter in, making it an ideal choice for an entertainment venue,” says Michael Grant, Birdair project manager. “The material is extremely durable and long-lasting while enhancing the aesthetics of the space.”
The project is slated for completion by Memorial Day 2010, when it will begin serving as a venue for the West Virginia Symphony and other entertainment.
Constructed 20 years ago, Haddad Riverfront Park features an amphitheater, boat docking and benches along the Kanawha River in downtown Charleston and offers recreation and special events for residents and visitors.
The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). SBA’s funding should not be construed as an endorsement of products, opinions or services. All SBA-funded projects are extended to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis. >
